to begin with, i am not an animal lover. it does not mean that i hate them. i am very much scared of dogs, cats, rats and all reptiles. i usually try to keep a safe distance from animals. but i don’t have any ill feeling towards them. i believe they also have equal rights on earth as we human beings have.
the incident i am narrating here, happened just 2 hours back. i went outside in my bike to have coconut water. as i came on main road… i saw a white cat crossing the road from left side. which is not a good omen. i believe in omens :-). so i thought of turning back and then goingย again after some minutes. but as i turned back, one cyclist and one car crossed the road. so i felt safe to continue the journey.
i had hardly moved 50 feets… and in the next lane, i saw a lady driving his bike very quickly towards the incident area… where 3-4 street dogs were mauling and killing a baby piglet. that lady and her teenage daughter threw stones at dogs to save the piglet. but by that time, they had already damaged the wind pipe (throat area) of the piglet and it was bleeding.
the dogs left this pig and starting mauling other baby piglets some distance away. getting inspired from this lady and her daughter efforts, i quickly took my bike further and tried to shoo away the dogs. which i will normally never do as i am scared of dogs. but in the heat of the moment, i was ignoring my fear and honking my bike and trying to shoo away the dogs. the young girl also came by my side and threw the stone at dogs. this way, we tried to save 3-4 piglets from dogs.
now we came back to the first piglet which was badly damaged. we all were thinking that it won’t be saved as it was bleeding from throat. but the teenage girl had a very compassionate heart for animals and she was insisting to her mother that it will be saved and should do something. the mother was also very caring and was an animal lover. but we all were hoping that the dog will not survive. we discussed the hopelessness of the situation and decided that the piglet will die.
the lady brought some water for the dog. tried to find a place where it will be safe from the dogs. but there was not such place. so in the end, we decided to leave with a sad heart. i went ahead to do my work. after 5 minutes, on the way back, i saw that mother and daughter have come back to the piglet side.
i went home and searched in google and found people for animals pune branch. i didn’t had much hope. as i don’t think that they will come so far. because their organisation office was on the other side of the city. but i just wanted to give it a try. because otherwise this incident will be hanging in my memory life long. there is so much tragedy and deaths happening all over the world and it does not mean that i will get involve in each and every situation. but i feel, if existence involves me in some accident then i should do my best to heal the situation.
so i called the PFA and they gave me the number of their representative who will come with a ambulance to take the pig. i was impressed. so i went back to the ground with my sister in law who is a animal lover. by that time, that lady has also somehow managed to contact PFA (where there is a will, there is a way).
so we waited in the ground for 20-30 minutes. the piglet was writhingย in pain. it was trying to get up but falling down again. there was a strong will to live in the piglet which was evident from her actions. after 20 minutes the PFA van came. they ask us to fill the form and if we want to make some donation. there was one more injured dog in the van which they had picked up from some other location.
i felt relieved after this incident and was very impressed with the service of PFA. someone from the crowd told that in mumbai, you have to take the injured animal to their office.
the purpose of this story is to say
1. that if there is any injured animal in your locality and you want to help it… then don’t hesitate to give PFA a call. their service was excellent in pune and i am very impressed.
2. i am very careful about how i spend my time. but this incident and my response to it gave me lot of mental peace and satisfaction. it actually opened my heart. if i had not tried to do my duty then may be life long this incident would have haunted me. whenever we fail to listen our heart then we suppress the heart. i blogged about this incident quickly as after sometime the mind will take over and i won’t write it. as the things which are usually important for heart are meaningless for mind.
3. sometimes, small things matters a lot and give you much more mental peace than we expect from them. these small things are those which are done without any expectation in return.
4. the teenage girl was very determined to help the piglet and her strong will helped her to find help for pig. her actions has made a difference in the perception of whole crowd which gathered there.
