More often than not, people who love to travel are yoga freaks or yoga freaks love traveling. The hippie streak of traveling and yoga offers a liberating experience and makes both of these activities go and hand in hand. And just like I love yoga and travelling both, I am often faced by a choice between the two. It does not matter how strong willed I am on vacation, I often find myself lacking in my yoga practice when I am on the go until it is a yoga retreat or a festival itself. Many of us who are stricken by wanderlust, carry a yoga mat with them but are unable to match the will to take out time to perform the poses. The easy going, laid back feel of a holiday in the mountains or crystal blue water with white sand view of the beach, calls for a mellowed approach, which is fine, but what do you have to say about the guilt it leaves us in?
And once you are back from the vacation, you gear up for a few advance asana classes to compensate for the lost time. Although the guilt depicts your commitment, you do not really have to go through it at all, if you follow these steps. They will help you perform yoga even when you are on the go, though you will still have to make the willing effort.
Ways to keep up with the yoga practice when traveling
- Carry the essentials
This goes without saying that when you prep for things in advance you are more likely to opt for choices to make it happen. This is to say that keep all your yoga essentials with you so that you can be more motivated towards your yoga practice. Yoga essentials could include: a few yoga clothes, a water bottle, yoga music, a few pre downloaded yoga classes, yoga mat etc. With all these things handy, you could just perform a small 20 minute routine before you step out of the hotel for sightseeing. And the best thing in all this is, you will never have to choose between your yoga or traveling because nothing leaves your side.
- Regularity: the key
Yes, consistency is the key to any form or art. Till the time you are not dedicated to your practice, do not expect it to do much for you. Consider this time at a time dedicated to you and only you. It is a time where you are compensating for all the overwork you put your body do. Set a time aside in the morning or perform a rejuvenating practice at night before calling it a day. Once you break the regularity, it takes some time to get back on the track. If you cannot do yoga, just do a simple and light meditation. The idea is not to do a rigorous workout, but to keep up the practice without a break.
- Don’t quantify
Back at home, we dedicate a decent number of hours for our body and take care of it with all our heart but then on a vacation we let it all loose. If you are setting a goal of 20 minutes practice while you are on the go, don’t overdo too. If you cannot perform 20 minutes do 10 minutes, If you cannot squeeze in the planned routine or a rigorous practice just perform a rejuvenating practice. Don’t get into the loop of, “Oh! There are just 10 minutes left for my practice, what can I really do in such a short time?” Just take up whatever time you have for the practice and just show up on the mat.
- Research & Figure
Yet another very good way of keeping up with the yoga practice is to find a hotel that will have an in-house functional yoga studio. When you have a yoga studio in the house, you will find it easier to perform your practice with the led classes. This way you can meet new people and also get to know a new yoga teacher. Unfortunately, if your hotel does not have a yoga studio, simply look for a yoga studio in the vicinity. With yoga culture picking up, there is a plenty of yoga studio scattered in almost all the places. You could call them in advance and check with them the timings, fees etc.
- The sacred Space
Meditation is a vital part of the yoga practice and yoga cannot be limited to the yoga posture. If you are running on a tight schedule and need to chalk out a way to perform yoga, you could simply go back to the sacred space behind your third eye. Being present is also a form of healthy yoga practice and helps people to deal with that traveling stress due to jet lag, tight hips or a bad experience on the go. Simply engage your third eye as you close your eyes and begin to the focus at the center of the head.
- Live it
Lastly but most importantly, yoga can be practiced both on the mat and off the mat. It would be unfair to limit a vast science like to the four corners of your studio or to the mat. When we say consistency, if must be consistent with the yoga attitude. The niyamas and yamas are the building blocks of a refined yogi and should be taken lightly. These steps are more important than performing a pretzel during your yoga practice. Simply bring in the good attitude wherever you go and you would have add meaning to many lives you meet on the go.
These six points will help you be the version of a refined yogi only when you incorporate it with a strong will and a dedicated attitude. Remember, without the will to become rich, no one can enjoy abundance. When in the desert, you have to find the oasis to satiate your thirst & it can’t be the other way round.
