i am very particular about switching off the fans, lights or TV when i am not using them. you can call me little mad in these matters.
now many of you must be wondering that i save electricity to save my electricity bills. no, thats not the case. because i don’t save much money by doing it. on the contrary, i think that i lose productivity and focus from my work. because when i realize that i forgot to switch off the light in other room. then i have to leave my literary work to close the lights. so as a writer sometimes, i lose the flow of my writing. so financially and work wise its a not a beneficial thing for me to do.
so why do i save electricity?
1. consideration for other people – here i am wasting electricity and there are villages in india where there is no electricity. sometimes poor children have to study under street lights. or women have to cook food in darkness. if all of us don’t waste electricity then government will be able to brighten up few more houses. or there will be less load shedding in your city.
2. pollution happens during generation of electricity. not all electricity is made via renewable sources of energy. much of the electricity is still made using coal. even if you make electricity via hydro or wind energy. there is considerable damage done to environment. e.g. while setting up hydro electric plant many villagers are displaced. wind energy kills many birds. so the electricity which i am consuming comes at a price. i just pay the monetary value and don’t ever consider other factors involved.
3. it helps the nation – much of the coal is imported from abroad and india loses valuable foreign exchange in importing coal. on top of it, many of us get subsidy for electricity. it all affects the economy of country. as a nation, if we have to prosper then we should have electricity for every home and for every factory which we want to set up.
so i save electricity for considering all these things. now a very important question is how much electricity i can save by doing it. will it really makes a difference in other people life?
i don’t think that it makes any difference. the difference won’t even be .0000001%. but it do makes a big difference in my life. i feel i have done my work ethically and honestly. i can not change other people way of living and thinking. i cannot force people to save electricity. only person whose life i can make a difference is mine. so i make sure that i live a ethical life and have a peaceful sleep in the night. one thing which i value a lot is clean consciousness and good night sleep.
so the other reason i do save electricity is because i feel it is my responsibility as a indian as well as a good human being. lets not waste and exploit the resources of mother earth. use them wisely and leave a beautiful planet for future generations.
