it happens with all of us that we keep the milk for boiling and get involve with something else. after some time we suddenly remember about the milk on gas. by the time you try to close the gas some milk has already spilled.
people all over the world believe in superstitions. so is the case with indians. indians give importance to omens in their daily life like cat crossing your way or twitching of eyes or lizard sound or breaking down of glass or someone calling you from behind when you are leaving your house. superstition are part of our life as they give us clues about what is coming ahead. sometimes they are right and sometimes we just need to ignore them.
what about the superstition with spilled boiling milk – most people consider it a good omen but there are folks who consider it a bad omen too.
e.g. when we do house warming ceremony (griha pravesh pooja) then first thing we do in gas stove is to boil the milk and let it spill. some people do it in such a way that milk is spilled in the east direction. as according to vaastu shastra east direction is considered auspicious. it brings luck, prosperity, positivity, peace and good health. so this custom must be done to activate the overflow of energy in east direction to bring good luck and positivity. east is also the direction from where sun rises. thus by spilling the boiled milk in east direction you are trying to make an auspicious beginning in your home.
on the other hand, spilling of milk before, during or after the wedding day is not considered auspicious. as they say it indicate some pending misfortune.
so while reading about spilled milk you will hear both side of stories. but generally it is considered auspicious.
milk symbolizes prosperity and abundance (as everyone cannot afford it), nourishment (because it nourishes you) and purity (milk given by humped cow of india is very satvic and pure. only humped cow milk or ghee made from it should be used for yagna or for religious purposes).
since milk signify the abundance and prosperity. so spilling of boiled milk does not mean that you will become very rich. it just mean that positivity, good luck, good energy or some money is coming your way. it is showing that you will receive more than what is your need (overflowing) or requirement at the moment.
so if by chance, milk is spilled while boiling then calm down. it is generally considered a good omen.
